A backlink is any link that points from an external website to your own.

For example, if you have a website about gardening (homegardens.com) and someone writes an article about your website and leaves a link to it, you just got yourself a backlink.

Backlinks are important for SEO because they are a sign of your website’s popularity. The more backlinks your site has, the more likely it is that Google will feature it in the SERP (search engine result page), making your site more visible and allowing you to get more traffic.

Why are backlinks important?

Backlinks are important because they are a signal to search engines that others vouch for your content.

When other websites link to yours, it signals to search engines that your site is relevant and trustworthy. This, in turn, can lead to higher search rankings and more traffic. But beware: Spammy or low-quality links can hurt your ranking, so it’s important to only earn links from trustworthy sources.

Because of this, building backlinks is a key part of any successful SEO strategy.

How to identify low-quality and high-quality backlinks

Low-quality backlinks

  • The site has no domain authority.
  • The site is littered with banners and pop-ups.
  • The anchor text is an exact match for your target keywords.
  • The content on the site is poorly written and full of grammar errors.
  • The site is clearly a directory or article farm, with little original content.

The first step in identifying low-quality backlinks is looking at the text of the incoming a link is clicked, Low-quality backlinks often uses some variation of “click here” or certain words, such as sex, porn, top-rated or free, and are much more likely to be spam than those with relevant and specific keywords. While none of these terms may automatically indicate a bad link, they can be warning signs that should raise your suspicions.

High-quality backlinks

  • The site is relevant to your niche.
  • The site has good online reputation.
  • The site has a decent Domain Rating
  • The content on the site is well-written and original
  • The page is getting at least some traffic every month

How To Build Backlinks

One of the most effective methods for building backlinks is Guest Posting.

This involves writing a post for another website and including a link back to your own site within it. The website you’re writing a guest post for will typically let you include 1-2 backlinks to your site. When adding backlinks to your guest posts, make sure to include your links as high up the page as possible to get more link juice.

Here are a few more tips for building backlinks:

  1. Reach out to other site owners via email or social media and ask if they’d be interested in linking to your site.
  2. Submit articles or press releases to sites that accept guest content and include a link back to your own site.
  3. Create great guest posts that other people will want to link to — a portion of that link power will get channeled back to your site.

By following these tips, you can start building valuable backlinks that will help improve your website’s search engine ranking.
