What Are Long-Tail Keywords In SEO?

Long-Tail Keywords are search queries that are usually three or more words long and are more specific, that’s why they usually have low monthly search volume.

For example, instead of just using the keyword “shoes,” a long tail keyword could be “men’s size 12 black dress shoes.”

These keywords are called “Long-Tail” because, if you plot them by search volume, they would be on the “long tail” end of the search demand curve, implying that only a small number of people search for these terms each month.

Long-tail keywords give search engines like Google a clearer understanding of the search intent of a user. As a result, these keywords typically have low competition and high conversion rates.

Why Should You Use Long Tail Keywords for SEO?

Long tail keywords are important because they give you a better chance of ranking for a specific keyword, and they also tend to convert better than more general keywords. That’s because people who use long tail keywords usually have a specific query and clearer intent of what they are searching for.

Long-tail keywords are less competitive.

It’s tempting to target popular keywords with high search volumes. The problem is that you’ll be less likely to rank for those keywords. Most popular keywords have a high Keyword Difficulty (KD) score. This means it’s really difficult to get to the top of SERPs with any of them. However, when you use a Long-Tail keyword with a low KD score, even if your website is new, you have a chance to rank in the top 10 search results and get a few visitors from those keywords.

It’s important to focus on Long-Tail keywords for better SEO because they’ll help you get better results in Google searches and drive more targeted traffic to your website.

It is easier to create content for Long-Tail keywords as they generally require less work.

When the search query is general, you’ll have to include more details to address it. But if the search query is specific, you can address it briefly with fewer details and still satisfy the searchers.

A great tip you can use is to look for clusters of similar Long-Tail search queries and address them with pages that differ only slightly.

The same website builder software would most likely apply to therapists as well as it would teachers or actors. So you can target these different searches with pages that have 80% similar content, and tailor the remaining 20% to each user profile.

Simply put, you can create a dozen pages to address similar long-tail searches in a single day quite easily.

How Do I Find Long-tail Keywords For SEO?

1. Use “Searches Related To…” on Google:

This is a section found at the bottom of Google’s search results.

First, type in a keyword that you want to rank for in the Google search box. Next, scroll to the bottom of the page. Then, look at the “Searches related to…” section for that keyword.

A great tip is to copy one of the keywords from the “Searches related to…” section and paste that term into Google’s search box. Then check the “Searches related to…” section for that keyword. Rinse and repeat until you have a great list of keywords

2. Use “People Also Ask” Boxes on Google SERP:

First, search for your keyword in the Google search box. Then, look for a “People also ask…” box in the SERPs. If you expand on a question, you’ll find an answer, and Google will generate more questions related to your topic

3. Use Keyword Research Tools:

Tools like Answer The Public generate questions people usually ask concerning your keyword. And since question keywords are long, they’re automatically Long-tail. Another great tool that you may find useful is Soovle.

4. Forums and Boards:

Go to forums that your target audience use. Find out the questions people are asking and answering about your site’s topic.

Alternatively, use these search strings to find them:

  • “keyword” + “forum”
  • “keyword” + “board”
  • “keyword” + “powered by vbulletin”

You can also search for your keyword + discussions. For instance, search “security discussions”. Then, once you find an active forum, look at the titles of the latest threads.

5. Google Search Console Performance Report:

The best keyword is sometimes one that you already rank for. If you have some pages ranking on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th page of Google, you may for long-tail keywords that you’re not even optimizing for. When you optimize these pages for SEO, they’ll usually hit the first page in a matter of days.

Please avoid Google Autosuggest. This feature is designed to generate highly popular search queries. Many of its keyword suggestions will turn out to be quite popular and competitive. Also be cautious when using keyword research tools, like Answer The Public, for the same reason.
