SEO copywriting is the art of writing persuasive content that’s distributed through search engines.

It’s a mash-up of two concepts: SEO & Copywriting.

  • SEO refers to optimizing web content so search engines can easily understand what it is about.
  • Copywriting is a writing style with the goal of influencing the reader’s actions.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between SEO copywriting and SEO content writing. The main objective of SEO copywriting is to take readers to the next step and convert traffic into leads and, eventually, sales; while the objective of SEO content writing is to create content that ranks high on Google.

Why should you focus on SEO copywriting?

While it may be tempting to focus solely on generating traffic to your website (as is with SEO content writing), it is important to remember that traffic is only part of the equation.

Once visitors arrive at your site, you need to convert them into leads and, eventually, sales. There are a number of ways to do this, but some of the most effective include creating compelling SEO content, offering incentives, and making it easy for visitors to contact you.

By focusing on conversion, you can ensure that your website will not only attract visitors, but also generate revenue.

How do I learn SEO copywriting?

To learn SEO copywriting, you’ll have to learn two distinct skills: SEO and Copywriting.

To learn SEO, first, familiarize yourself with the basic concepts. Read articles and blog posts on the subject, and try to get a general understanding of how it works. Once you have a basic understanding of the principles of SEO, you can start to implement those concepts on your own website. Start by doing some keyword research, and then use those keywords throughout your site, including in your title tags, meta descriptions, and headings.

To learn Copywriting, first, familiarize yourself with the basics of copywriting like different types of copy, psychology of persuasion, and writing headlines. Once you have a solid understanding of these concepts, you can begin to practice writing copy by taking on small projects for friends or businesses.

Once you have these two skillsets, start creating content that is both persuasive for humans and readable by search engines.
