Technical SEO is all about enhancing the technical aspects of your website with the objective of securing better rankings on search engines.

For example, improving the loading speed of your website will make life easy for search engine crawlers to index your website. Technical SEO is part of on-page SEO strategies and it contributes to better rankings.

Why should you focus on technical SEO?

Search engines—including Google—are constantly looking to serve the best possible results to their users.

That’s why they look at metrics like loading speed and user experience when deciding what to serve. So improving the technical SEO of your sites means you’re making them more crawler-friendly — assisting the search engines when crawling your website and trying to understand the content.

Having technical problems on websites can negatively impact you as well.

For example, if your robots.txt file is not in the right location—hidden from bots—your website will be de-indexed or straight-up blocked by search engines.

So technical SEO is all about making sure your site doesn’t have any problems that could get in the way of indexing bots.

How to improve technical SEO?

Here are some of the most important things you can do to improve the technical SEO of your website.

1. Get your SSL certificate

SSL certificate installation enhances the security of requests sent between your website and the server. In other words, it ensures a secure experience for people who visit your website and do information transactions with it.

Search engines give priority to websites with SSL certificates, so getting one should be your first priority.

2. Mobile responsiveness

A lot of people who visit your website will probably be on mobile devices. That’s why you need to make sure your website has a responsive design and will adjust for mobile devices.

3. Page loading speeds

Search engines love websites that load quickly.

If your page takes too long to load, you’ll be delivering frustrating experiences to visitors. To make sure that doesn’t happen, you should use a fest web hosting plan and a fast DNS.

Along with that, you should use only one CSS stylesheet, minimize the total number of HEEP requests, and optimize the images on your website.

4. Create an XML sitemap

If you have an XML sitemap on the website, you’ll help search engines understand the website as they crawl through it. In other words, you’ll be helping the search engines index your website effectively.

The sitemap also contains some useful details, such as the last modification dates and the frequency at which your content gets updated.

5. Enable AMP

AMP or Accelerated Mobile Pages can deliver a faster experience to mobile users. You can create these by creating a barebones-code version of your pages and properly linking them with proper HTML tags.

Search engines simply love AMP pages and highlight them whenever possible.
